What Is a Well-Woman Exam?

A well-woman visit is a routine preventive healthcare appointment focused on your reproductive, sexual, and overall health. Your visit may include a review of your medical history, vital signs, health screenings, cervical cancer screening, a breast or pelvic exam when appropriate, and time to discuss your period, hormones, sexual health, fertility, menopause, and other concerns.

You should generally have a well-woman visit each year, even when you do not need a Pap test or pelvic exam. The services you need may change based on your age, health history, symptoms, and personal risk factors.

Why Are Well-Woman Visits Important?

You do not have to feel sick to benefit from medical care.

A well-woman appointment focuses on prevention. It gives you and your provider a chance to look at your health now and consider what may help protect it in the future.

These visits can help you:

  • Stay current on recommended health screenings
  • Identify changes in your health earlier
  • Discuss menstrual or hormone issues
  • Review your sexual and reproductive health
  • Talk about fertility and pregnancy plans
  • Discuss changes related to perimenopause or menopause
  • Review your family and personal health history
  • Ask questions you may not have time to discuss at another appointment

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends regular well-woman care even when a specific screening or physical exam is not due that year.

At Obria, this preventive approach is part of broader gynecological care that considers your physical, mental, emotional, and reproductive well-being.

What Happens During a Well-Woman Visit?

Every visit is different because every woman has different health needs.

Your appointment usually begins with a conversation. Your provider will review your health history and ask about changes or concerns you have noticed.

Your visit may include a review of your:

  • Menstrual cycle
  • Medical and surgical history
  • Current medications and supplements
  • Family health history
  • Sexual health
  • Pregnancy and fertility goals
  • Mental and emotional health
  • Nutrition and activity
  • Sleep
  • Tobacco, alcohol, or substance use
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Preventive screening history

Your blood pressure, weight, and other vital signs may also be checked.

Based on that information, your provider can recommend screenings, tests, exams, education, or follow-up care that fit your needs.

Does Every Well-Woman Visit Include a Pelvic Exam?

No.

A well-woman visit and a pelvic exam are not the same thing.

A pelvic exam may be recommended if you have symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, vaginal dryness, unusual discharge, pain during sex, urinary concerns, or another medical reason for the exam. For women without symptoms or increased risk, the decision to perform a routine pelvic exam should be made together with their healthcare provider.

This means you should not skip your annual well-woman visit simply because you do not think you need a pelvic exam.

There is still plenty to talk about.

What Is the Difference Between a Well-Woman Visit & Other Appointments?

What Women's Health Screenings Might I Need?

Preventive health screening is not one-size-fits-all.

Your provider will consider your age, health history, family history, previous test results, and other risk factors before making recommendations.

Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer screening looks for changes that could lead to cervical cancer.

Depending on your age and screening method, this may involve a Pap test, an HPV test, or both.

Under ACOG's updated 2026 guidance for average-risk patients:

Ages 21 to 29: Pap testing is recommended every three years.

Ages 30 to 65: Clinician-collected high-risk HPV testing every five years is preferred. Co-testing with HPV and a Pap test every five years is an acceptable alternative. A Pap test alone every three years may also be used in certain situations.

Screening needs after age 65 depend on your previous results and health history.

Breast Health

Your well-woman appointment is also an opportunity to talk about breast health and your risk for breast cancer.

Your provider may ask if you have noticed changes such as a new lump, nipple discharge, skin changes, or breast pain. A clinical breast exam may be appropriate based on your age, symptoms, and health history.

STI Testing

A well-woman visit can also be a good time to discuss testing for sexually transmitted infections.

STI testing recommendations depend on factors such as your age, sexual history, symptoms, pregnancy status, and other risks.

Obria provides STI testing and treatment as part of its women's healthcare services.

Can We Talk About Fertility & Family Planning During a Well-Woman Exam?

Absolutely. A well-woman visit is a good opportunity to discuss what you want for your reproductive health.

You may want to:

  • Better understand your menstrual cycle
  • Learn when ovulation may occur
  • Prepare for a future pregnancy
  • Discuss difficulty becoming pregnant
  • Learn about fertility awareness
  • Avoid pregnancy
  • Talk about changes after pregnancy

Obria provides natural fertility awareness and FEMM cycle education to help women better understand their cycles and fertility patterns.

Obria does not prescribe hormonal birth control or insert IUDs. The clinic can provide education about fertility awareness and also offers IUD removal for patients who need that service.

What About Perimenopause & Menopause?

Well-woman care remains important after your childbearing years.

As hormone levels change, you may begin experiencing:

  • Changes in your period
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Mood changes
  • Changes in sexual health
  • Bone health concerns

You do not have to simply accept uncomfortable symptoms as something you have to live with.

Your provider can listen to your concerns, review your overall health, and help you understand what may be happening.

What Should I Bring to My Well-Woman Exam Appointment?

You do not need to do much to prepare.

It can be helpful to know:

  • The first day of your most recent period
  • Your current medications and supplements
  • Dates of recent Pap tests, mammograms, or other screenings
  • Your personal and family medical history
  • Any changes you have noticed
  • Questions you want to ask

Do not worry if you cannot remember everything. Your appointment is a conversation, and you can work through the information with your provider.

When Should I Schedule a Well-Woman Visit?

Well-woman care is generally recommended each year. You do not need to wait until your annual visit if you notice a new or concerning symptom.

Contact a women's healthcare provider if you notice persistent pelvic pain, abnormal or very heavy bleeding, a new breast lump, unusual vaginal discharge, pain during sex, or another change that concerns you.

Preventive visits help you stay ahead of health concerns. Problem-focused visits help address symptoms when they happen.

You need both when the situation calls for them.

Frequently Asked Questions About Well-Woman Visits

How often should I have a well-woman visit?

ACOG recommends regular well-woman exams, typically each year. The individual screenings and exams you need may occur on different schedules.

Do I need a Pap test every year?

No. Most average-risk women do not need annual cervical cancer screening. The timing depends on your age, health history, and which screening test is used.

Will I have a pelvic exam at every well-woman visit?

Not necessarily. ACOG recommends pelvic exams when symptoms or medical history indicate they are needed, with routine exams for women without symptoms based on shared decision-making.

At what age should I start well-woman visits?

Women's health visits can begin during adolescence and often focus first on education, menstrual health, healthy habits, and questions about the body. Adolescents generally do not need an internal pelvic exam at their first gynecological visit unless symptoms make one necessary.
