When Do You Get an Ultrasound?

Early Pregnancy Ultrasound	Around 6 to 8 weeks	Confirms the pregnancy, checks for signs of early development, estimates how far along you are, helps determine a possible due date, checks for more than one pregnancy, and confirms the pregnancy is located in the uterus.	This may be helpful if you are unsure of your last period, have irregular cycles, or have symptoms that need medical review.
First Trimester Pregnancy Ultrasound	6 to 13 weeks	Helps answer key questions like: How far along am I? Is there a heartbeat? Is the pregnancy developing in the uterus? Could I be carrying twins? What is my estimated due date?	For many patients, this ultrasound provides peace of mind and helps guide future care.
Second Trimester Ultrasound	18 to 22 weeks	Often called an anatomy scan. It checks fetal growth, movement, major organs and body parts, placenta position, amniotic fluid, and signs of certain health concerns.	This ultrasound gives your medical team helpful information about how the pregnancy is progressing.
Third Trimester Ultrasound	If more information is needed	May be used to check fetal growth, the baby’s position, fluid levels, placenta concerns, high-risk pregnancy needs, or follow up on earlier ultrasound findings.	Not every pregnancy needs a third-trimester ultrasound. Your provider will explain why another ultrasound may be recommended.
